Living a healthy life is the utmost desire of every human being. Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well being. Doctors usually emphasize that we should eat healthy foods because they have the idea that a Nutritious Diet is important for living a healthy life. To maintain a healthy lifestyle, you need to keep eating healthy. Add more fruits and vegetables to your diet and eat fewer carbohydrates, high sodium, and unhealthy fat. Avoid eating junk food and sweets. Avoid skipping a meal because it will only make your body crave more food the moment you resume eating.
Living a healthy life means that you have to take care of many areas of your life including diet, physical activity, body weight, sleep, anxiety, depression, smoking, etc. These areas have a large impact on the risk of premature death.
1. Diet, includes everything that you consume on a daily basis whether it's vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains, meat, etc. These foods contain different kinds of nutrients which are essential for all the systems present in our body. Nutrients are compounds in the foods which are essential to life and health providing us with energy that acts as a building for the repair and growth of our body. There are six major nutrients which include carbohydrates, fats, protein, vitamins, minerals, and Water. Healthy foods include vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains, healthy fats, and omega-3 Fatty acids. While on the other hand, Unhealthy foods include red and processed meat, sugar, sweetened beverages, fats, and sodium.
2. Physical activity, is any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that require energy expenditure including activities like working, playing, carrying out household, bicycling, traveling, etc. Physical activities have amazing benefits for our physical and mental health. In any physical activity when you are moving, the blood flow rate increases and blood rushes into your veins which aren't getting blood when you are static. During physical activity, our digestive system converts the food that we consume into nutrients, and when we are involved in any kind of physical activity blood carries these nutrients to every part of our body which makes us healthy.
3. Bodyweight, is the measurement of weight without items located on the person. A person's body weight is the measurement of how healthy he is at the moment. Body weights amount is not fixed for everyone, it varies from person to person. The ideal body weight of a person depends on his height, gender, and age. If you have ideal body weight it means you are a healthy person but if your body weight is above or below ideal bodyweight that means you are not healthy. Overweight can be caused by the accumulation of excessive fats in your body which can cause diseases, while weight lower than ideal weight means that you are not feeding your body according to its needs or you are facing some kind of health issue.
4. Sleep, is the condition in which our body and mind are relatively inactive, the eyes closed, and muscles are in relax mode. Sleep is vital for our overall health because it enables our body to repair and be fit for the next day. During sleep, our body's healing system becomes more active which results in the healing of wounds and diseases. It's also necessary for maintaining a healthy body weight and a healthy lifestyle. A good night's sleep can help in the improvement of our immune system and in getting rid of depression and anxiety.
5. Depression, is also known as a mood disorder. It affects us in different ways like interference in daily work, low productivity, feelings of sadness or anger, etc. It is important to realize that feeling down is part of our life and everybody experience it. Depression can be caused by something that has happened or about to happen, drug usage, or some medical condition. Exercise and physical activity are the best solutions for depression because it produces a chemical called endorphin which helps your mood to be better.
6. Smoking is a bad habit that is very hard to break because cigarette contains an addictive chemical called nicotine. Smoking has hazardous effects on overall health because it affects all of the systems present in your body including the respiratory, digestive, nervous, and cardiovascular systems. The best way to avoid getting sick from smoking is to never start. If you do smoke, quitting as soon as possible can prevent or reverse health problems.
To live a healthy life we have to take care of all the aspects of our life. Here is a list of few healthy behaviour that contributes to wellness and satisfaction with ones' lifestyle.
- Brush and floss daily
- Enjoy eating with family
- Get a good night sleep
- Smiles a few times in a day
